I firmly believe that excellence in design flows from open communication between all parties, and from trust.  It is important to me to listen clearly to your goals, and to interpret them in a way that exceeds your expectations.  But I also recognize that the best design is forged out of challenge, from clients who push to get to that next level.

Newland Architecture offers a range of services, tailored to your needs:

  • Architectural design.  From simple sketch studies through full construction documents and construction administration, Newland Architecture can develop design options that address your needs.
  • Consultations.  From opinions to full assessments and reports, I can help you in determining if your goals are achievable.
  • Visualizations and renderings.  I have deep and varied experience in helping to visualize physical or imaginary environments, including physical models, rough sketches, careful drawings, digital recreations, photo composites, and more.
  • Written reports and articles.

For larger or complicated projects, I often work with consultants who provide expertise in key areas.  Often, Newland Architecture will retain these experts directly.  Other times, I'll work in partnership with them although they may be hired directly by my clients.  The goal is the same, however: To work cooperatively to best serve the project's needs.  Consultants with whom I've worked include the following:

  • Structural engineers
  • Interior designers
  • Landscape architects
  • Acousticians
  • Mechanical engineers
  • Electrical engineers
  • Civil engineers
  • Golf course architects
  • Food service experts

Hand sketches

In the process of exploring designs, I do a lot of hand drawing, from loose diagrams to more finished 3D studies.  Although I've always likes sketching, I try to exploit the power of computers to study designs in three dimensions and the effect of different materials and lighting more accurately than any hand drawings can achieve.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is state of the art for architectural projects in that the project is built virtually in three dimensions.  As opposed to CAD (computer assisted drafting / design), which was a two-dimensional computer tool that took hand drafting into the digital realm, BIM enables architects, engineers, other consultants, and contractors to interact on a single database.

Newland Architecture uses ArchiCAD, developed by Graphisoft, for BIM.
